What is Bulletproof Coffee? Is It All Weight Loss and Energy? Or Just Hype?

I am always researching new health and fitness trends. I workout 6 days a week and maintain a healthy lifestyle but still struggle from low energy. I have been reading about this Bulletproof Coffee trend for awhile and it seems strange but people seem to really be into it! The recipe claims to give you all day energy through healthy fats and caffeine while supporting sharp mental clarity and weight loss. Sounds like a dream, right?

How do you make it? Bulletproof Coffee consists of very hot coffee, 2 tablespoons of grass fed butter, plus 2 tablespoons of MCT oil or coconut oil (medium chain triglyceride oil).

UM….people are putting butter in their coffee? Sounds gross to me! Most people use a hand frother, blender or emulsion stick to get the consistency of a latte. People are substituting this drink for breakfast as there is plenty of calories to make up the meal.

Companies that back the trend even claim that drinking this version of coffee every morning is a secret shortcut to weight loss and can give you heightened mental clarity. Apparently the drink uses fat to burn fat. Also, a favorite of ketogenic dieters everywhere who also eat fat to burn fat. Some fitness experts look down on this rush of fat to the body, while others think it’s genius.

I tried it! Ok, I was a little grossed out putting the butter in and I had to go to the health food store to find the MCT oil which does have some great benefits (a concentrated version of coconut oil that is around 6 times as strong, it is said to provide instant and sustained energy).

The taste. It wasn’t bad! I frothed it up in my blender and it resembled a latte. The butter gives it a little salty taste and the oil gives it a nice bit of sweetness. I will say, I did feel more energetic throughout the day. I don’t know about increased mental sharpness but maybe that happens over time?

Have you tried it? Are you a fan and has it aided in any weight loss or other health benefits? Let us know! For now, I think I’ll stick to my good ole coffee and coconut milk :).
