There are seven billion people on this planet and over a billion of them are on Facebook. Amazing! Being far and away the most used app, Facebook has a lot of little features casual, everyday users don’t really know about. Who wants to spend time poking around settings when you can be looking at cat memes? Check out just a few of the hacks you can use to make the most out of your social media time.
1. Sync with Your Google Calendar.
First, log in to Facebook and click on the “Events” link in the left column. At the bottom of the right column, you’ll see links for Upcoming Events and Birthdays. Right-click on the link you want and choose “Copy Link Location.”
Then open your Google Calendar. In the left column, find Other Calendars. Click the down arrow in the “Other Calendars” page, and then click “add by URL.” Paste the link that you copied from Facebook, and click “Add Calendar.” After a few seconds a new calendar option will appear. It will update automatically, however Google says that it might take a few hours sometimes.
2. Keep your privacy.
How does Facebook make money? By figuring out what you’re doing on AND off of the site and placing the appropriate ads targeted towards you. The company tracks almost everything that its users do in an effort to understand them. Facebook Disconnect is a browser extension that’s available for both Firefox and Chrome. Install it in your browser and it blocks Facebook from getting information about what websites you’re visiting.
3. Find hidden unread messages.
If you get a message from someone you don’t have mutual friends in common with, Facebook will send that message to an “Other” folder. And FB doesn’t notify you of these messages, so check that folder every once inwhile. To find the “Other” folder, click the word bubble icon at the top of the page. Then next to where it says “Inbox” click “Other.”
4. How does your profile look to a stranger?
There’s tons of people whose Facebook profiles are set to public, which means any creep out there can read there messages and view their photos. Think yours is private? Make sure by viewing your profile as a stranger. To do this, go to your profile, and select “View As…” from the menu button on the bottom right corner of your cover photo. It should be next to the Activity Log under “…” – Now you’ll be able to see what your profile looks like to the public as well as to specific friends. Remember to keep those embarrassing photos under wraps. Your bosses or ex’s could be peeping them.
5. Turn off notification sounds.
Tired of having Facebook notify you every time someone likes a post that you’ve made? You can turn off Facebook’s notification sounds. Click the little upside down triangle in the upper right-hand corner of the Facebook page, then click the “Settings” link. In the left column select “Notifications”. Where it says “On Facebook,” click the “View” link and uncheck “Play a sound.” Then click the “Save Changes” button.
