I find that this time of year no matter how much I prep in the fitness department I start to panic when I think about starting the search for the perfect swimsuit. Swimsuit shopping is almost like shopping for that elusive pair of jeans — there are so many choices and it can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack!
Last year instead of just going into this endeavor blind, I did a little research, and it not only paid off in one great swimsuit, but I ended up with three. The trick is actually no trick at all: it’s just some simple tips that will help you narrow down the choices quickly and walk out feeling like you’ve earned a million bucks.
To Find a Swimsuit You Must Know Your Body Type
Just like when you search for a dress or pair of jeans knowing this information is priceless in the bathing suit department. Once you know what category you fall into you can then choose swimsuits that flatter your particular shape! Sounds too good to be true, right? Trust me, this is fool proof! Let’s break down these body types:
Think Marilyn Monroe & Kim Kardashian…curves for DAYS! To fall into this category you have a defined waist with a full bust and hips that are generally the same size. The key to this body shape is all in accentuating these proportions. The best choice for hourglass figures is the bikini. One of the best tips is to take advantage of the “mix & match” bikinis so you can customize your look to perfection. When choosing a top it’s best to lean toward more structures options preferably with underwire to keep those “ladies” looking nice and perky. There is nothing worse than having “boobs in your shoes”!
When choosing a pair of bottoms try and avoid bikini bottoms with ties that hit right at the hip as well as horizontal stripes…remember we are trying to keep everything in proportion & by picking a more subtle bottom and structured top your tiny waist becomes the superstar!
If you have a smaller bust and waist, but shapelier hips, you fall into this category. Never fear you are in GOOD company featuring ladies like Beyonce and J. Lo. So, similarly to the hourglass we are going to want to keep things simple on the bottom half. Whether you pick a solid color or a pattern is up to you just remember to stick to clean lines and not a lot of ruffles or extra fabric. Now, here is where you get to shine: it’s all about the top half. I mean it — go nuts. Ruffles, sparkles…the works! Truly ANY shape top will work for you because you don’t have to worry so much about support. We want to bring the eye up to your best asset, so maybe try a deep plunging halter or a fun bandeau! The most important thing is to have fun with what you choose!
This shape is for those of us who hold our weight in the middle of our bodies! When I used to be overweight I fell into this category. I know it can be challenging, but there are some incredible options for you too! The great thing about being apple-shaped is that, girl, you got some GREAT LEGS, and let’s face it, your legs are what you show the most of in a swimsuit. So enjoy that!
Now, one of the best options for this category is the one piece, but don’t fear: we aren’t going to put you in a granny suit. The options for the one piece now a days are endless, so try on a bunch. A few things to keep in mind, wrap style swimsuits will be your best friend. Look for options that nip in around the waist. By finding suits with fabric that wraps around the waist, you are tricking the eye into thinking the waist goes in (aka giving you more shape). Yay! Also, don’t shy away from color. For years I thought I could only rock black, which is not true at all. Color is definitely fair game as long as it has the right shape. Oh, and one more thing: you know the big “vintage trend” that’s so hot in swimwear these days? Well, guess what, all those vintage style one pieces will look KILLER on you!
I know what you are thinking, “WHAT?” Trust me it truly is how this body type is described. It only means you are straight up and down like a tall glass of water (aka Taylor Swift & Kate Bosworth). Now that I’ve lost weight I fall somewhere between the apple & boyish types. Believe it or not this is one of the easiest and most forgiving body types when it comes to swimwear!
The only thing we need to do is give you the illusion of curves, and that can be done in so many ways! Being pear-shaped, you can have a lot of fun in the top department. You could go for a triangle top or, if you prefer, even a more pushup option. Just remember to keep it fun and colorful. Now, of all the body types you look the best in a string style bottom, you know the ones that tie on the side. By keeping the majority of the fabric to the center of the body you give the eye the idea that you have curvier waist (which is the goal), we are creating some curves. The ties on the side that hang just so will also create the idea of more ample hips! Win, win!
Another type of suit that is great for the boyish type is the vintage style high waisted bikini! I know it sounds strange, but by adding a little more fabric to the bottom half of your body with that sailor style halter top will give you such great shape! Basically, I’m saying that even though the name of this category suggests otherwise the sky’s the limit for you by beach time!
