Nike has high hopes for releasing the self-lacing shoes from the sci-fi film, Back to the Future II, by the end of this year.
Nike designer Tinker Hatfield is most excited about the project and announced that the Nike Air MAG shoes will be coming soon. The kicks are designed to look exactly like the shoes worn by fictional character Marty McFly when he is transported to 2015.Nike CEO Mark Parker describes the Nike Air MAG as the “greatest shoe never made.” They are a high-top style shoe that are equipped with “power laces,” which tighten on their own when feet are placed inside.
Dezeen magazine reports that “Nike filed a US Patent for self-lacing shoes in July 2014, featuring motorised rollers embedded in the soles. These would be activated by a control system that could either be operated using a button on the side or respond to changes in weight, wrapping the ends of the laces around themselves and creating a tightening effect.” These shoes have a grey and white design and feature battery-powered LEDs embedded in the soles, heel, and the light-up Nike logo on the strap.
Nike auctioned off 1,500 pairs of the Nike Air MAG’s on Ebay in 2011 but they didnt have the self-lacing technology installed in them. Dezeen reports that “the auction raised over $4.7 million for a Parkinson’s charity established by Michael J Fox, the actor who played McFly in the movie series.”
There is no official release date or price for the newly-designed McFly shoes. Hatfield did hint at the fact that there are “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015.” Be patient, but keep your ears peeled for the official release date.
