Michael Kors Honred at Couture Council FIT Luncheon

The Couture Council of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology honored Michael Kors with its 2013 Couture Council Award for Artistry of Fashion. The Award Luncheon, which benefits The Museum at FIT, was held at Lincoln Center and marked the beginning of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Each year a panel of journalists, retailers, curators, and fashion historians choose an honoree based on the individual’s impact on fashion over the breadth of their career. Kors could not be a better recipient. A true entrepreneur at heart, Kors left FIT after two semesters and launched his own personal line. Within three years his collection was sold at Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue. Since Kors has successfully navigated the treacherous waters of the fashion industry and has become an industry icon.

The high-profile ceremony included attendance from Matilda Cuomo, Nina Garcia, Chanel Iman, Iman, Natalie Morales, Martha Stewart, Hilary Swank, and Anna Wintour. Hilary Swank presented the award saying Michael is “open, curious, enthusiastic, optimistic, he’s real. That’s rare. And to me, that is so much more attractive than any design could ever be. When you combine that along with his incredible gift and talent, it brings such an authentic and beautiful quality to his craft.”

Realizing as much success as Michael Kors has he has been able to retain a humility and a true sense of self. Accepting his award Kors said, “When people say to me, ‘What is it like to be where you are? When did you know you made it?’ I have always believed that the minute you know that you’ve made it, you’re done. And guess what, I’m not done. I am really so incredibly honored to be receiving this award.”
