What's the Latest Wrap on DVF's Wrap Dress

It’s hard to believe that DVF‘s famous wrap dress was created forty years ago. Every season this fashion staple seems to take on a new form, and never ceases to impress. Celebrating the dress that started it all for the brand, DVF opened it’s exhibition Journey of a Dress in Los Angeles on January 10th. The launch party brought out Diane von Furstenberg herself, as well as celebrities and fashion icons like, Anna Wintour, Rachel Zoe, Molly Sims, Gwyneth Paltrow and Marisa Tomei.

Diane von Furstenberg reflected on her legendary wrap dress. She said, “I have a very interesting relationship [with the wrap dress], because this dress has given me everything. It has given me independence, it has paid for my bills, it has paid for my children’s education, it has given me fame, it has made me live the American dream. It not only made me independent, but along the way I made other women independent.”

The legendary wrap dress is as much of an essential in every woman’s closet as the little black dress. The appeal to the dress is quite simple. The dress fits every woman’s body and is flattering for any shape and figure. “I think the wrap dress is great for the every woman,” said Molly Sims, “short, tall, heavy, slim. It’s so flattering on so many different body types, I think that is why it has stood the test of time.”

Another aspect of the success of the wrap dress is its versatility. It can be dressed up for a night out, or attired for a day in the office. Alexandra von Furstenberg commented on it being empowering for women in the workplace. She said, “I think it was the first time that the working woman, back in the 70’s when she came up with the idea, really felt empowered to not necessarily be the man that works, but to put a dress on and still feel empowered [in the workplace]. So it was very rewarding for the women then.”

Diane von Furstenberg may have created the wrap dress, but as she states, “the wrap dress had a life of its own.” And that’s a wrap!
