Diet Pepsi is Replacing Aspartame with Splenda in Soda. Does it Matter?

Are you a Diet Soda drinker?

This may be good news to you (but actually, if you’re drinking diet soda, maybe no news is good news).

Diet Pepsi has announced that they’re switching their artificial sweetner from aspartame to Splenda. This is due to research showing health hazards of aspartame, including it being a multipotential carcinogenic agent. Yuck.

Although the move to start drinking a healthier soda, this tweet offers a very intuitive perspective:

Aspartame Vs. Splenda

There are a few adverse effects between the two sweeteners. Aspartame can cause respiratory difficulties, weight gain, heart palpitations and more. Splenda, however, can strongly effect your intestinal microflora, and destroy up to half of your beneficial gut microbes, which in effect can weaken your immune system and lower general health.

Should You Quit Diet Soda?

The Zest opinion is to ditch diet soda all together. While you may think it’s protecting you from serious weight gain, especially if you’re trying to shed a few pounds, studies show artificial sweeteners increase your chance of weight gain.
