The last time I cried happy tears was at a friend’s wedding when my friend (the bride) had her daddy-daughter dance. The relationship and connection between a girl and her father is so special because her choice of partner is greatly influenced by her dad. In turn, fathers are so protective over their little girls that it’s not easy to see them grown-up and move on. It’s not easy for most fathers or father figures to give away their daughters on her special day and it’s even harder to give a speech at the wedding reception. One dad skipped the speech AND the dance to do something even more meaningful.
Nicole Cortez uploaded this video of her wedding back in 2012 of the extra special gesture. Her father learned the sign language version of the Heartland song “I Loved Her First,” and signed it for his daughter. While impressive, the signing brought Nicole and her husband to tears for another reason.
“I am a sign language interpreter so this meant the world to me,” she wrote under the YouTube video. “He said it took him the entire year I was engaged to learn how to sign this song.” It’s understandable that something so touching would cause Nicole to tear up and that in turn made her father cry.
Check out the entire video and watch until the end when Cortez’s dad has a special signed message for his new son-in-law.
We wish more people would shirk tradition at weddings and do something different that has extra special meaning that makes their day unique and truly unforgettable.
