A billionaire spent a record $48.4 million buying a 12.03-carat diamond dubbed “Blue Moon” for his daughter at an auction in Geneva. Joseph Lau, a property tycoon from Hong Kong, bought the rock at a Sotheby’s auction on Wednesday and immediately renamed it “Blue Moon of Josephine” after his daughter. This comes just one day after he bought a rare $28.5 million 16.08-carat pink diamond that he renamed “Sweet Josephine”.
David Bennett, the head of Sotheby’s international jewelry division, said the “Blue Moon” sale broke several records and made the gemstone the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction. Experts says the market for colored diamonds has been increasing over the last few years.
Obviously this guy loves diamonds almost as much as he loves his daughter. But how old is lucky Josephine?
