Angels Come Around When You Least Expect Them
From the day Yuri was born, the odds were against him. He was diagnosed with a urological birth defect that affects 1 in 50,000 children born. The condition is called bladder exstrophy, and is caused by the malformation of the abdominal wall.
When Yuri was just two days old, his mother threw in the towel and gave up on him. A social worker was able to transport Yuri from his native Russia to the United States, where he was taken in by a foster family.
While he was receiving treatment for his rare condition at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland, it didn’t look like Yuri’s luck was going to turn up. For years families came and went, never adopting the lonely little boy.
During his time in treatment, one nurse at Hopkins, Pam Butler, stepped in to be his go-to person while Yuri was at the hospital. “As the days and the weeks went by, Pam Butler was falling in love with this child and this child was falling in love with Pam Butler.”
